Women’s History Month With Steph Paynes From Lez Zeppelin (Video Interview)

Not A Tribute Band – This Band Embodies Led Zeppelin

I first saw Lez Zeppelin about ten years ago in NYC and was blown away!

Lez Zeppelin is an all female Led Zeppelin experience featuring incredible musicianship and a respect for the Zeppelin catalog that will leave you speechless.

In late 2007, the band (then consisting of Steph Paynes, Sarah McLellan on vocals, Helen Destroy on drums and Lisa Brigantino on bass and keyboards) recorded its first album containing six Led Zeppelin selections (one song from each of the first six albums) and two originals. The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City with producer/engineer Eddie Kramer , best known for his work with Led Zeppelin and Hendrix, and was mastered by George Marino, who digitally remastered all of the original Led Zeppelin recordings with Jimmy Page.

In June, of 2013 Jimmy Page  attended their show in London and said of the group, “They played the Led Zeppelin music with an extraordinary sensuality and an energy and passion that highlighted their superb musicianship.”- A ringing endorsement.

The band is –

Leader and founder of the band, Steph Paynes (Guitar, Mandolin, Theremin);

Dana Athens (Vocals);

Joan Chew (Bass, Keys, Mandolin);

Hillary Blaze (Drums/Percussion).

I caught up with Guitarist Steph Paynes a few months ago and she told me what has inspired her the most during the bands live shows – Beyond the music of Led Zeppelin.
